Caryn Borland

Caryn Borland

I was born in Los Angeles and lived in Van Nuys, CA until age 6 when my parents moved to Orange County, CA. I’ve been there ever since!

I attended elementary school at Christ Lutheran, Costa Mesa, where my love of music began.  All my teachers were very musically gifted and I enjoyed learning new songs, singing in church and school choirs, and occasionally performing solos in church.  I later attended Orange Lutheran High School and Christ College Irvine and continued performing in choirs as well as several plays and musicals.

Piano lessons didn’t really stick, so I began taking guitar at about age 10 and voice lessons at age 12. I began writing music at age 13.

During high school, I began singing at weddings and other events.  Singing and music of any kind has always been a major part of my life.

I enjoy a wide range of musical styles including classical, jazz, Christian, gospel, big band, country and Rock ‘n Roll!  As long as there’s a good message or fun lyrics and a catchy tune that’s all I need to make me happy.

I continue to take voice lessons and have now begun to take chord piano which is going much better than traditional piano lessons did when I was a child.  I am a member of the worship team at my home church, Christ Lutheran in Costa Mesa (yes, where I went to elementary school!) and am so thrilled to have released my first album!

I am also a member of the Board of Directors of a wonder non-profit ministry to military, first responders and their families called Healing Heroes Ministries (www.healingheroesministries.org).  The people and purpose of this ministry were the inspiration for my song, Sacrifice, and all proceeds from this song will be donated to this ministry to help support our Heroes in the military, fire, law enforcement, and their families.

I am a proud alumna of Concordia University Irvine and continue to serve on their Board of Regents.  City on a Hill, the title song of my album, is dedicated to my alma mater.  I also have a Masters in Spanish from Cal State Fullerton and taught elementary and junior high Spanish as well as ESL to adults before I became a full-time mom when my son was born in 2000.

Other hobbies include cooking, baking, spending time with my family, target shooting, traveling, and being with good friends.  I am a voracious reader and love many kinds of books from classics to comedy to history.  I also enjoy good movies, concerts and good food.

Although this album is definitely Christian I enjoy singing and performing a wide variety of musical styles and specialize in harmonies which I get to practice with when singing with the worship team at church.

I am married to Michael Borland and have a son, Justin and a very spoiled King Charles Cavalier named Annie.
