Story

I wrote this song while I was a student at Christ College Irvine (Now Concordia University Irvine).  During one of our chapel services a wonderful man named Dr. Ken Behnken, gave a very inspirational sermon on Matthew 5:14-16, “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.  Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” (NASB)

In his message, Dr. Behnken compared Christ College to a “City on a Hill” that can be seen throughout all of Irvine and that it is up to us to spread Christ’s love to the world, not hide in the ivory tower of academia.

I was so touched and inspired by this message that I went back to my dorm room and wrote this song.  I like to sing it as a blessing or benediction and it is now dedicated to Concordia University Irvine where I am still actively involved in alumni activities and as a member of the Board of Regents.

As a side note, I had the honor to sing this song at Trinity Cristo Rey Lutheran Church’s 100th anniversary celebration and Dr. Behnken was in attendance and got to hear it!

Lyrics

CITY ON A HILL

by Caryn Borland

1.  May God keep you in the shelter of His wing

May He show you His love and teach you to sing

May you grow by His word, walk in His light

Be filled by His Spirit, fight the good fight (CHORUS)

CHORUS:

You are the light of the world

A city on a hill cannot be hidden

His life for you He has given

So let your light shine

2.  Proudly bear His name through all your days

Never tread from His path Nor turn from His ways

Keep your eyes fixed on Him, live by His grace

Not growing weary of running the race (CHORUS)

BRIDGE:

Abide in the knowledge of God

Not being blinded by the wisdom of men

Letting your good works be seen by all

That they may give glory

To your Father in heaven (CHORUS)

ENDING:

You are the light of the world

A city on a hill cannot be hidden

His life for you He has given

So let your light shine

Bright and clear

Throughout all the world
